Pitch feedback and development

Friday 30th September 2016

Today we had to pitch our script idea that we will eventually produce. It was a 25 word pitch with a title, genre, character information, location and a few extra lines of the story. Once we had pitched our idea, Simon our lecturer and the rest of the team gave feedback.

Although I am thinking of going into scriptwriting after the course, pitching is new to me and this was my first one which I found nerve wracking.  In the end I enjoyed receiving feedback and hearing other people's ideas to help improve my idea.

As my story is about a vlogger finding out if she has cancer, a few people recommended people to check out such as a guy on Facebook who had cancer and documented it; also another guy who has advanced bowel cancer that started a campaign giving hope to people.

The feedback I received was:

  • What was the reason this person vlogs, could it be that she starts vlogging if she finds out she has cancer.
I also had feedback about my secondary character:

  • Instead of having a physical character what about using 'online viewers' of hers through comments. Also taking a look at the film 'Nerve' and how it uses online comments.
  • A patient that has cancer who doesn't understand why she would want to vlog this journey.
  • Fans meeting her and asking what she is up to and where she is going
  • The friend running a marathon for her.
I found the feedback really useful and I will take this all on board when writing my script. I also read an article today which has given me a bit more inspiration for the story. It was about a brother who promised 10 things to his dying brother with leukaemia such as looking after mum and dad,  to be with his sibling through good and bad etc. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/young-mans-perfect-final-gift-for-dying-little-brother-days-before-he-passed-away-from-leukaemia/ar-BBwRLhV
