Screenwriting - 'Soft' short film

'Soft' vimeo (2011)

Monday 26th September 2016

Today we looked at pitching scripts and a short film called 'Soft'  from director Simon Ellis.
To pitch a script we were told to think of it as  'The elevator pitch' which means if you met someone such as an executive producer in an elevator, you only have that short time to try and sell your script to them.

After watching 'Soft', we had to come up with a 25 words or less pitch in a limited time. However before we done this, we decided together on the genre, setting, characters, theme, tone, conflict and change:

Genre: Drama
Setting: Modern/urban
Characters: Father,son,gang of thugs
Conflict: Fear,pride,power and emotional conflict
Change: Moral compass, role reversal
Theme: Coming of age, father son relationship,karma/bullies
Tone: Gritty/real

Having the option to work in pairs or by yourself, I worked by myself, I then came up with a pitch in 24 words:

'Father and son are threatened by a gang of thugs. Emotionally conflicted, this gritty/real drama shows the role reversal of father and son.'

I wasn't entirely happy with this pitch that I had come up with,  it was the last part of the pitch that I struggled with and just couldn't think what to put which is why I ended it with a repeat of 'father and son'. After presenting this pitch, this was picked up on and I was advised to try and reword it so there isn't any repetition of 'father and son'. I managed to reword this and it is as follows:

New pitch (23 words):

'Emotionally conflicted, this gritty/real drama shows the role reversal of a father and son after being threatened by a gang of thugs.'

I do think my second pitch sounds better as there isn't 'father and son' in it twice but I still feel it could be done better. I think I will look into pitching more to try and gain some more useful tips and information.
